#TDP MP says names carry cultural and emotional significance; draws attention to Amaravati while stressing respect for parliamentary decisions
Vijay said the proposed change from Kerala to “Keralam” reflects the state’s traditional identity in the Malayalam language. He described the move as an acknowledgement of Kerala’s distinct cultural character and said India’s federal structure is strengthened when the identities of its states are recognised.
“India’s strength lies in its diversity,” Vijay said, emphasising the importance of respecting the distinct traditions and identities that define different parts of the country.
Drawing from the identity of his own party, Vijay pointed out that “Telugu” forms an integral part of the Telugu Desam Party’s name and represents Telugu pride. He recalled the role of TDP founder Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao and acknowledged the efforts of Chandrababu Naidu in promoting the interests and identity of Telugu people.
He subsequently referred to Amaravati while discussing the significance attached to names and decisions taken through the parliamentary process. He thanked Members of Parliament who had supported Amaravati and said the name holds deep emotional significance for the people of Andhra Pradesh.
Referring to the proposal to replace Amaravati with “MAVIGUN”, Vijay questioned the move and stressed that decisions approved through the constitutional process should be honoured.
“Once the Constitution Bill is passed in this highest order of this Parliament, no one should go against the Bill. So once it is passed, it is passed,” he said.
Vijay concluded by thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for efforts to remove colonial-era names and reconnect the country with its traditional roots, while reiterating his support for the Keralam Bill.
